Well that's fantastic.

I was supposed to start my new job today, but I have to wait another week now... A few weeks ago, I went to take a drug test with a company called Sterling. I’m telling you their name so that, if you ever have a choice in the matter, you’ll know not to use them. I went, I peed, I left. Easy enough. A few days later, they called me while I was at the movies, so I didn’t answer. They then called my employer, saying that they were for some reason unable to leave me a message and they needed to talk to me. My employer told me this, so I called Sterling myself. After 20 minutes, I was finally directed to a real human. I asked why they needed to speak with me, and he told me that they didn’t; they never called me and everything was in order. Okay, great! I told this to my employer. They told me that, no, they hadn’t received anything. I called Sterling again, but I used a different number to reach their lab directly. Same story: everything looks good, they’ve already sent the results, and they don’t need to talk to me. He even assured me that it sometimes takes time and I should be good to go.

Fast forward to Friday night. I suddenly realize I haven’t heard anything back from my employer after telling them that Sterling says everything is good. I attempt to call the woman who hired me, using her personal number as the office is closed for the weekend. I get a busy signal. I try again several times throughout the weekend, leaving a message on her office phone as well, until eventually I find out that her cell phone has been disconnected for some reason. Wonderful.

This morning, I woke up at 6:00 and showed up an hour early for orientation. I hadn’t been told when to arrive, because they are STILL waiting on my results and were not expecting me. They told me this, and I asked if I could call Sterling with them right there so that they could verify that, no, nobody has gotten anything from them. Since it’s a medical thing, however, they legally couldn’t do that. So I went home. I called Sterling yet again. Nobody answered. I held for half an hour. Nothing. I left a message telling them to call me back on my home phone so that they can leave a message if I don’t answer, and insisting that everything is NOT okay and they need to figure out what’s missing.

This was 2 hours ago and I have not gotten a call back. If they don’t contact me today, I’m going to their office tomorrow to get answers. This is really pissing me off, because apparently they only contact the client if there is something that could constitute a failure. I’m 100% positive that it’s one of my prescriptions, but to my new employer, it could be anything. This is not a good first impression at all, and I’m just hoping they’ll make at least SOME effort to make things right.

Why didn’t you just do LabCorp or Quest?

Sterling was closest to me. I wish I knew they were terrible.

I’m guessing it’s some sort of controlled substance prescription? If that’s the case, I’d say to lean towards the safe side and just take any potentially problematic scripts with you to the testing facility.

I have a feeling that seeing how these competitors operate with little competition for contracts from multinational companies, they can all get away with being shitty.

I do things in terms of Escalation.

First I will call, leave a message. Then I will call a few times a day. Then I will call on the hour every hour. Then while calling, I start emailing their group boxes. Eventually, someone answers.

Luckily, the only employer I’ve had that actually tests used one of the hospitals in town. My current employer only tests on a “reasonable suspicion” basis, so basically if I fall off a step stool and injure yourself, you’ll get tested. Or if I came to work and was obviously high af.

Yeah, I’m not sure what it is exactly, but I’m bringing all my stuff there.

The only things that they actually screen for are -

Amphetamines (meth, speed, crank, ecstasy)

THC (cannabinoids, marijuana, hash)

Cocaine (coke, crack)

Opiates (heroin, opium, codeine, morphine)

Phencyclidine (PCP, angel dust)

Unless they go 8-Panel or 10-Panel (unless you’re becoming a fighter pilot or something, they probably won’t do this) and beyond, which can include -

Barbiturates (phenobarbital, butalbital, secobarbital, downers)

Benzodiazepines (tranquilizers like Valium, Librium, Xanax)

Methaqualone (Quaaludes)

Methadone (often used to treat heroin addiction)

Propoxyphene (Darvon compounds)

So that should give you a good idea of what may have tripped it. They could have also just fucked up, which is more likely.

Well damn. Yeah, I don’t take any form of any of those.

Keep in mind that there are a few medications that would show up. Adderall would appear as amphetamine and painkillers would likely show up as opiates.

But yeah, I think that they’re just running a loose ship and screwed up.

Ooooh, wait a minute. It’s gotta be my Vyvanse.

And now I’m just wondering why they never asked me what medications I take beforehand.
